1.The Kargil War was a conflict between
India and Pakistan that took place between May and  July 1999 in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.








2.The
conflict began when Pakistani forces infiltrated into Indian territory and occupied  key heights along the Line of Control (LoC), which serves as the de facto border between India and Pakistan.




3.The Pakistani forces, which included both regular soldiers and militants, were led by General Pervez Musharraf, who would later become the President of Pakistan.

India launched a military operation, codenamed "Operation Vijay," to recapture  the occupied heights. The operation involved ground troops, artillery, and air power, including fighter jets and attack helicopters.




5.The Kargil War was fought at high altitudes, with some of the key heights being as high as

18,000 feet above sea level
